广州能源所定位是新能源与可再生能源领域的研究与开发利用，主要从事清洁能源工程科学领域的高技术研究，并以后续能源中的新能源与可再生能源为主要研究方向，兼顾发展节能与能源环境技术，发挥能源战略的重要支撑作用。近期目标：在生物质能源高值化转化与规模化利用，分布式可再生能源独立系统应用示范2个方向实现重大突破；在天然气水合物成藏理论与开发研究，海洋能/深层地热规模化发电关键技术，太阳能直接利用功能材料及关键技术，低碳发展及能源战略研究4个方向重点培育方向取得重大进展。
